Flipgrid is a multi-media message board, which is called "grid." Teachers post tasks or questions on their grid and students verbally complete the assignment by creating a short video response. Many times students are put on the spot in a classroom setting to prove their knowledge of the subject matter. The student's nervousness, low self-confidence, or poor public speaking skills can lead to the interference of the teacher's true understanding of the student's skill mastery. Flipgrid eliminates these social factors, because it allows students to perfect their response before posting to the grid. Once posted, peers can view other responses to further their knowledge of the subject matter by hearing other's points of views, strategies and beliefs. Teachers can view the video reflections to check for skill mastery and pin-point possible misconceptions. Flipgrid also understands the importance of feedback and embeds features such as rubrics, emoji reactions, and comment boxes to allow for further growth of knowledge.

IMPORTANT TERMINOLOGY |
DEFINITION |
GRID |
A single page which hosts various topics created by the teacher. The free account allows the teacher one free grid, or page. If the educator would like more than one grid, for multiple classes, then the teacher must upgrade. |
TOPIC |
A topic is an assignment which hosts a prompt and all of the student's completed video responses. Teachers have the option to make topics private to the classroom community or public. They even have the option to make each video private without peer access. |
VIDEO RESPONSE |
Using a microphone and a webcam, students can use any device to record their solutions, beliefs and/or strategies to answer the prompt. Teachers have the option to view responses prior to automatically posting. |
OTHER TERMINOLOGY |
DEFINITION |
BASIC RUBRIC |
Once the students post their video response, the teacher can grade the response using a basic rubric. The rubric has two indicators: performance and quality. This is available on the free account. |
COMMENTS |
With the upgraded account, students can reply to their peer's video responses in a comment box. Dialogue is then created to further learning. |
CODES |
Grids and topics are extremely easy to share by self generating short codes for students to input. Custom codes are available with the upgraded account. |
CO-PIOLOTS |
Other teachers can be added to a grid for collaboration between classes. |
CUSTOM RUBRICS |
With the upgraded account, educators can build rubrics that specifically meet the needs of the prompt. |
FAMILY SHARING |
Send private links to parents, so they can be involved in their child's education without sacrificing their privacy. |
FEATURE STUDENT RESPONSES |
If one video response is absolutely fabulous, "feature" the response. This will enlarge the students post and place it above all other responses. |
FEEDBACK |
With the free and paid account students can respond with emojis to express their thoughts. With the paid account, teachers have the option to allow students to leave comments and respond to comments creating a dialogue of learning! |
LENGTHS |
The free account allows the teacher to decide if the video response should be 15 or 90 seconds long. The paid account allows various options for length varying from 15 seconds to 300 seconds (5 minutes.) |
LMS |
Integrate Flipgrid into your learning management system such as Canvas. Embedding Flipgrid into any web page is super simple! |
MULTIPLE GRIDS |
With the paid account, teachers have unlimited grids, or pages. This is helpful if you have multiple classes. Although you only get one grid, with the free account, this does not stop teachers from combining all classes into one grid. Sharing the individual topic codes makes it very easy for various classes to go straight to the intended topic. |
SCHEDULE TOPICS |
If an educator would like to work ahead without crowding their grid, or giving access to future work, then the teacher can schedule topics to be introduced on a specific date/time. (Paid account only.) |
The most obvious audience for this amazing tool is K-12 students. Flipgrid can even be integrated in the post-secondary world. Flipgrid can be used as an effective tool for student's cognitive, social, and emotional development, although it can be used outside of the classroom as well.
- Engage parents, by allowing parents to partake in the learning process. Grids can be shared with parents, so they can monitor their child's progress, respond to the videos, and even become part of the original prompt. Teachers can even ask parents to solve a particular problem and their child must check for accuracy.
- Use Flipgrid to create powerful professional development sessions. Collaborate with colleagues effortlessly.
- Involve business and industry, by creating real-world topics for the experts to respond. Students will become captivated audiences!
- Travel the world, without ever leaving the classroom. Connect with others across the world and let them teach students about famous landmarks, various cultures, money systems, local geography, and the list goes on and on!
